Wishaw school putting the Focus on Food
St Ignatius Primary School in Wishaw is cooking up a storm in the kitchen.
So much so that the school has been awarded the ‘ Healthy Eating Initiative’ award following their fantastically foody project ‘Focus on Food’.
The award, from the Community Education Awards was presented to the school, and students who took part because of the ingenious use of resources and project planning, as well as the core concepts of the project itself.
St Ignatius, specifically Anne Marie Pearson who headed up the project, began after noticing and researching the type of meals families were eating at home. She noticed a high trend of takeaway meals. So to encourage proper healthy diets, not just for students but also their parents she began the ‘Focus on Food’ scheme.
Supporting students and parents by bringing in senior community leaders, food technology experts and staff from around the area, Anne Marie tasked parents to work together with their children to plan, and make healthy meals. But understandably parents with other children, specifically in early years, do not have time to spare and cannot arrange childcare, so pupils within the school organised a crèche so that parents could get involved.
Supporting students in school by providing them with cookery classes, and providing parents with information from local experts gave everyone involved the tools they needed to get stuck in during the after school cooking sessions. Parents even reported feeling more valued and more comfortable talking in the school, especially during the classes. As everyone sat down afterwards at set tables (done by very efficient helpers), children, staff, parents and other adults involved, everyone enjoyed a relaxed, spectacularly healthy dinner.
The school has stated that following on from the success of this year’s ‘Focus on Food’ a larger scale repeat is most certainly in the works for next year.
